Following the introduction of the ZTZ88 in the early 1990s, plans emerged to combine the ZTZ88 hull with the successful turret from the Type 85-IIM, which was exported to Pakistan, along with domestic fire control systems. This project proceeded successfully as the WZ122H, entering PLAGF service as the ZTZ96 (Chinese: ZTZ96式主战坦克). It has served the PLAGF for nearly three decades and undergone a number of upgrades, including the ZTZ96A which is equipped with ERA packages.
Introduced in Update 1.93 "Shark Attack", the ZTZ96 boasts a distinctive appearance and introduces several features unseen in previous Chinese medium tanks. While its general layout resembles the Soviet T-72, it exhibits significant differences in turret and hull design. The welded turret is flat and angular, deviating from the traditionally favoured domed shape of both Soviet and Chinese designs. The ZTZ88-derived hull also diverges from the traditional T-54 chassis with smaller roadwheels, altered angles, and increased dimensions. Composite armour is incorporated into the turret cheeks and upper glacis plate.
Like the T-72, the ZTZ96 features a 125 mm smoothbore cannon with an autoloader. Its shell selection is somewhat limited, but the APFSDS and HE shells are effective against most ground targets. Protection and mobility are average at best, but players familiar with previous Chinese tanks will be accustomed to these limitations. ZTZ96 commanders will appreciate the potent firepower and look forward to the ZTZ96A, a modernised and significantly improved variant equipped with thermal sights and ERA protection.
