The WMA301 is an export product of NORINCO Factory 256 in Chongqing, designed as an alternative to the domestic PTL02 assault gun. Its design likely draws from prototypes developed in the late 1980s, a time when the PLAGF had yet to develop a low-recoil 105 mm gun for assault gun platforms. Sharing the same WZ551 chassis as the ZSL92 APC and the PTL02 assault gun, the WMA301 boasts notable differences. Notably, it features a newly designed welded turret that resembles the ZTZ96A in its arrowhead shape and replaces the original 100 mm smoothbore gun with a standard 105 mm rifled gun. This assault gun saw service in various African nations with extensive plains and in Myanmar, serving as a rapid-response asset for buyers and a mobile addition to their arsenals.
Introduced in Update "Red Skies", anyone familiar with the PTL02 will find adapting to the WMA301 straightforward. While largely similar, the primary distinction lies in its armament. The 105 mm rifled gun shares an ammunition selection akin to the T-69 II G, with the addition of the GP105 gun-launched ATGM. Though the WMA301's APFSDS round is less potent than the PTL02's top-tier round, it compensates with a proximity fused HE round for countering helicopters and a powerful tandem-warhead ATGM capable of defeating heavily armoured targets, making it a versatile platform. With astute positioning and situational awareness, the WMA301 can contribute effectively in nearly any engagement.
