The H8K2, designated as the Type 2 Large Flying Boat, Model 12 (二式飛行艇一二型), was the successor to the earlier H6K, boasting an incredible 7,400 km range over the already record-breaking 5,000 km of the H6K, along with an extra boost in speed. This extended range gave it a 50% advantage over the B-17 and G4M and a 30% lead over the B-29. Developed primarily with long-range bombing and reconnaissance in mind, it also faced competition from the G5N for its bombing role. While its initial development was rather troublesome due to the sheer requirements and size involved, it ultimately earned its reputation as one of the most fearsome aircraft in the Pacific theater. Its imposing size, range, and—most dauntingly, for Allied pilots—its deadly defensive capabilities made it a formidable threat.
Introduced in Update 1.57 "Battle March", the H8K2 stands out as one of the most formidable bombers, particularly for its tier. Despite appearing to be a slow and easy big target, the H8K2 boasts powerful engines with substantial fuel capacity, a formidable array of 20 mm cannons capable of taking down pursuers in a well-aimed burst, and remarkable durability. Additionally, it is surprisingly maneuverable given its size and weight. However, its advantages are offset by its bomb load capacity, maxing out at a modest 1.6 tons—ranking it as the third-largest bomb load in the Japanese bomber line after the G8N and G5N.
